THE CHILD. America's children need love. Despite a host of services for them, they are more likely to be murdered, poor, pregnant, drug dependent or incarcerated than the children in any other industrialized country. 2 out of 5 children live in single parent homes. 1 out of 3 children lacks a significant father figure. 1 out of 5 children lives in poverty. These children need a relationship with a caring adult. One person who knows their name, reads to them, holds their hand, and laughs with them. Someone who believes in them and won't let them down. Someone who gives them hope. THE HOUR. For most KIDS HOPE USA children, the hour they spend with their mentor seems too good to be true. It is beyond their belief that any adult who is not paid would actually want to come to see only them. But the KIDS HOPE USA mentor does come to see them. Week after week. Not to see many children. Not to see several children. The mentor comes to see just one child, and gives that child the gift of a caring relationship. The impact of these 60 minutes is almost magical. Because the trained mentor believes in the student, she begins to believe in herself. Changes in the child's attitude, behavior and academic performance are observed by teachers and even principals. THE CHURCH. There are many people in each neighborhood church who want to reach out to a child but don't know how. KIDS HOPE USE gives the church a way to train and organize its members as mentors and prayer partners that make a difference in the life of a child. THE SCHOOL. KIDS HOPE USA strictly adheres to the separation of church and state. Schools want KIDS HOPE USA because it is a proven intervention to increase the academic skills of at-risk children at no cost to the school.
The opportunity is vast. The need is great. The idea is simple. One Child, One Hour, One Church, One School. You Could Be The one! Send your prayers to our mentors and students during this school year as we build our friendships. It is an exciting time for us, reaching out to a child that God has chosen for us, praying that we will know how to help this child, that we will bond with them and become good friends with them. |
