306. James Maitland Lauderdale was born in 1690 in Thirlstane Castle, Lauderdale, Berwickshire, Scotland. He immigrated in 1714 to , , , USA. He died on 17 Aug 1789 in , Sumner, Tn, USA. He was a Blacksmith and Farmer in Looney's Mill Creek, Augusta (Now Botetourt), VA, USA. It is likely that James Maitland lauderdale immigrated to Pennsylvania from Northern Ireland, from which he had relocacted from Cork, Scotland, in the early 1700;s, as one of the thousands of Scotish immigrants fleeing civil wars in Scotland and England. He was again forced to flee Ireland due to civil war there.


1744 James recorded the purchase of land from John Harrison on the South Branch of the James River. In 1749, he purchased 366 acres on Looney's Creek. In 1759, he purchased an item at an estate sale. In 1760, he posted a bond for David Looney. In 1768, he posted a bond for Margaret Looney, His daughter (widow of Peter Looney). In 1764, he was appointed a processioner of the waters of the James River and Catawba Creek. In 1767, during the French and Indian War, he was listed as a supernumerary (i.e., over age 50), which means he was born before 1717. In 1767, in Stephen Trigg (a merchant in Fincastle) vs James Lauderdale, he assumed a debt for his son James, who was then about 20. James provided supplies during the Revolutionary War. By 1795, when James Sr migrated with his son James Jr to Sumner County, TN, he had accumulated over 1100 acres on the James River, owned five slaves and had built a grand house which he sold to Henry Bowyer. He died shortly after the migration.

307. Mary Turner Lombe was born in 1734. She died on 20 Jul 1789. Children were:

i. William Lauderdale was born about 1740. On record in Augusta County, VA to dive some cattle for his sister Margaret. Margaret inherited the cattle from her husband.

ii. John Lauderdale was born about 1747. Migrated to Georgia and the Pendleton District of South Carolina about 1780.

iii. James Lauderdale Jr was born about 1749. Migrated to Sumner County, Tennessee.

iv. Jane Lauderdale was born about 1756.
v. Elizabeth Lauderdale was born about 1753.
vi. Mary Lauderdale was born about 1762.
vii. Annie Lauderdale was born about 1765.
