ELEVENTH GENERATION1984. Thomas Williford
was born about 1625 in , , , England. He died in 1676 in , Northumberland,
Va, USA. Captain Thomas Wilford emigrated from England to Virginia about 1840.
As a younger son, he could not inherit from his father because of English laws
of primogeniture and his very existence was endangered by his father's loyalty
to the Crown. His uncle, George Sandys, had served as treasurer of the Virginia
Company and had lived in Virginia for 10 years. He settled in the Northern Neck,
a peninsula between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers which became Northumberland
County. One of his neighbors and friends was a fellow emigrant from England
whom he quite likely had known in England. This was John Washington, who's great-grandson
was destined to become the first President of the United States. On 10 November
1651, Thomas Wilford was granted 250 acres on Perries Creek in recognition of
his persuading five persons to settle in the Colony. In 1676, Thomas Wilford
was one of three prominent landowners who joined Nathaniel Bacon Jr, in leading
a rebellion against heavy taxes and Governor Berkeley's failure to suppress Indian
Massacres. Through their efforts, Jamestown was partially burned and Governor
Berkley was temporarily driven from the capital. At the peak of their sucess,
Bacon died suddenly. The Governor promptly sent out raiding parties and captured
Major Chisholm, Thomas Hansford and Captain Thomas Wilford. The latter two were
taken before Berkeley's court on shipboard in the Eastern Shore area, where they
were summarily condemned and later hanged.
