9792. Sir Richard (Blind Baron) Maitland died on 20 Mar 1586 in , , , Scotland. He was born in , , , Scotland. Keeper of the Great Seal. He became blind in middle life and began writing satires in his sixtieth year (eg "Aganis the Theivis of Liddeadaill"). He died thirty years later on 20 March 1586. He is remembered for the "Maitland Folio Manuscript", a collection he made containing 41 of his own poems and 141 pieces by earlier poets including William Dunbar. The "Maitland Quarto Manuscript" was compiled by his daughter Marie, and both are held by the Pepysian Library at Magdalene College, Cambridge. Along with the "Bannatyne Manuscript" they represent the most important sources of texts of the period.
He was married to Lady Mary Cranston.
