Boer goats were not common in the US but since the early 1990s their popularity has gained a definite place for breeding, meat and show market. The improved Boer goat was the product of the effort of several farmers in South Africa where the first Boer goat breeders Association was organized in 1959. The Boer goat yields lean meat of high quality. The breed is very fertile and multiple births are frequent. Goats prefer brush and shrubs but can adjust to other sources of food. Their longevity is approximately 10 years.
