Rumor has it that the way into the Deadmines lies through the quiet, unassuming village of Moonbrook.”

Getting There

Head south from Sentinel Hill along the road and go right at the ‘T.’ You will see the town of Moonbrook on the left hand side after a short bit. Follow the turn-off into town until you come to a large fountain. Turn slightly left and the entrance is on the right end of the large lumber mill.

Quests

The Defias Brotherhood Quest Series – This series starts with Gryan Stoutmantle in Sentinel Hill. When you get there, pick up The People’s Militia, Part 1 [12] from him as well. While not necessary, the second part of The People’s Militia sends you after Defias Pillagers and Looters, which can be found around Moonbrooke when parts 5 and 6 of this quest take you there. Part 1 [18], Gryan sends you to Lakeshire in the Redridge Mountains to talk to Wiley the Black. Find him in the inn. Part 2 [18], Wiley will tell you that the Defias are up to something big and sends you back to Gryan with a note. Deliver the note to Gryan Part 3 [18], and he will send you to speak with Mathias Shaw, the head of Stormwind Intelligence. Mathias will tell you a short background of the Defias Brotherhood and their leader, Edwin VanCleef. Part 4 [18], Mathias sends you back to Gryan with a report on the Defias. Note: Before continuing, finish off Part 1 of the People’s Militia and pick up Part 2 from Gryan. Part 5 [18], Gryan now sends you to find a Defias Messenger somewhere between the town of Moonbrook, the Gold Coast Quarry, and the Jangolode Mine. You can either head for the Jangolode Mine and follow the road south until you find the messenger, or head for Moonbrook and kill Defias Pillagers and Looters while you wait for the messenger to respawn. He will show up as a neutral npc, so he should be easy to spot. After you kill the messenger and retrieve the mysterious message, return to Gryan. Part 6 [18], Gryan tells you that they’ve captured a Defias Traitor who is willing to escort you to their secret hideout. Follow the traitor along the path described above in Getting There. Protecting him is by no means impossible, but it’s nice to have help for this part. Part 7 [22], Finally, Gryan is ready to send you after VanCleef. Descend into the Deadmines and kill Edwin VanCleef. Bring his severed head to Gryan to receive a well-earned reward.

Red Leather Bandanas [15] – Pick up this quest from Scout Galiaan next to the lumber mill. Retrieve 15 bandanas from Defias all over Westfall. Very easy to do with Part 1 and 2 of The People’s Militia. Complete this quest and turn it in. When Gryan Stoutmantle gives you Part 7 of The Defias Brotherhood, climb the stairs of the tower and pick up Red Silk Bandanas [17] from Scout Riell. These drop from Defias members in the exterior of Deadmines and inside the instance. Easily completed in one trip.

Underground Assault [20] – Talk to Gnoarm of Tinker Town in Ironforge and he will send you to Speak With Shoni. Shoni the Shilent can be found next to the fountain in the Dwarven District of Stormwind just outside the Deep Run Tram (how convenient for you!).

Collecting Memories[18] and Oh Brother…[20] – Wilder Thistlenettle inside the tavern of the Dwarven District in Stormwind asks you to collect 4 Miner’s Union Cards and Forman Thistlenettle’s Badge from the undead miners that are found in a portion of the Deadmines.

Walk-through

Enter the building that the Defias Traitor pointed out to you in the sixth part of The Defias Brotherhood quest series. As soon as you do turn left and go through the doorway ahead of you. Climb the stairs ahead of you and cross the balcony to the far doorway. Once through the doorway turn immediately left again and proceed forward. This will take you through yet another doorway and place you at the top of a spiraling staircase cut into the rock. Go down the stairs and follow the path ahead of you, across a catwalk, and down a second set of stairs. You’ll pass a passage on the right and come to the first chamber, which opens to your left. Cross the chamber and head down the passage in front of you near where the passage you went by rejoins the path. You’ll curve left and come to a second chamber. Follow the wall to the right and come to the next passageway. This will ‘S’ curve right and then left and bring you into the third chamber at the base of a bridge. Cross the bridge and drop down to the right to avoid the mobs in this area. The portal will be down a slight decline to the left.

Don’t Forget To…

Get the Miner’s Union Cards for Collecting Memories and Foreman Thistlemettle’s Badge for Oh Brother… from the Undead Miners section of the exterior. This area appears purple on the map. When you reach the second chamber of the exterior, stay left instead of right and you’ll come to this section.

Be Sure to Grab…

The five pieces of the Blackened Defias Armor leather set drop within the Deadmines.

For those with a sense of humor, be sure to grab [Cookie’s Tenderizer] for that special woman in the game. Not only is it a nice one handed mace at 10.5dps, but it’s also a rolling pin!
